Post-processing of iron plating: post-plating machining

2022-06-27

①Machining after iron plating is carried out on a metal cutting machine or on a grinding machine, which depends on the machining allowance, required precision and surface finish of the part.

②The thickness of the iron plating layer taking into account the machining allowance can be determined by the following formula:

where h——the thickness of iron coating, mm;

        hl - the thickness of the chrome coating, . mm;

        d——nominal size or repair size of the part, mm;

        d0——The diameter of the part before iron plating, mm;

        δ——Machining allowance on each side, mm.

③ Machining allowance. It should be determined by the size and shape of the part and the thickness of the coating. The more complex the parts are, the greater the thickness of the coating required, and the more uneven the iron plating is, the greater the machining allowance should be. When the plating thickness is 1.5~2mm, the machining allowance should be 0.3~0.4mm (diameter direction). When a thin coating is deposited, the machining allowance can be reduced to 0.2 ~ O. 3mm.

For parts that are carburized after iron plating, the machining allowance should be increased to 0.4 to 0.5 mm (diameter direction), because the necessary machining before and after carburizing should be considered at this time.

④The electrolytic iron plating layer can be processed well with turning tools and produces long but not broken chips, which proves that the deposited metal has high toughness. Obviously, toughness is the reason for the rapid dullness of the turning tool, so it is recommended to use a turning tool with high hardness in the processing of iron coating.

⑤ Grinding. Blockage of the grinding wheel is caused by the toughness and relative softness of the coating on the part. To avoid jamming when grinding iron-plated parts, a medium-grit, soft-base grinding wheel should be used. The application of the grinding wheel of aluminum hydride or corundum with a particle size of 46 to 60, CM2 to CM1, and Renhao Knee adhesive can produce good results.

⑥ Cutting speed. The mechanical properties of the coating and its bonding strength with the base metal are quite high, so a larger cutting speed and a larger feed amount can be used during processing. Thick coatings should use the same cutting amount as unquenched medium carbon steel.

⑦The thickness of the iron coating should not be less than 0.2~0.3mm after the final processing. Thinner coatings may bulge or crack under the influence of cutting stresses when turned or ground. Therefore, the cutting speed of the thin coating shall not exceed 20-25m/min during turning, and shall not exceed 15-25m/s during grinding.

⑧ Coating milling (keyway, etc.), it is best that the milling cutter can apply the coating to the base metal without producing tearing force during operation.
